Description of Elective Experience

General practice with mixed small animals (exotics, birds, fish, wildlife) in a clinical and home setting.  Surgery of companion animals including dogs, cats, reptiles, fish, birds, as well as wildlife. Wellness care, dentals, and treatment of diseases and elective surgeries. 

 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.

Busy state of the art office with ultrasound, cold laser therapy, complete IDEXX lab, all in one dental unit and surgical set ups.

Emergency and wildlife care. 

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?

Student externs will participate in patient care and accompany DVM on client house calls. Student should expect to be involved in all aspects of the clinic for a well rounded experience. Punctual, prepared and actively involved - place IV's, take radiographs, collect laboratory samples and their preparation, induce anesthesia, monitor patients, perform necropsies, assist (perform minor)  surgical procedures. Assist in wildlife care and surgeries. 

The student can expect to work 8 to 10 hours (depending on emergencies/wildlife rescues) per day, 5-6 days a week.  Five major holidays are observed by the entire clinic but an on-call status is maintained for clients with emergencies.
