Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will attend rounds and participate in diagnosis and treatment of most species in a zoological setting. A mentored project (research, teaching module, case presentation, etc) is to be completed during the externship.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students will participate in all facets of the medical program at the National Zoo's facility, including: routine care of hospitalized animals; quarantine animals; pathology; medical records review; case rounds. A special project will be assigned whenever possible.

 

Student Supervision:  Monday - Friday + one weekend day per week (>40 hr per week)
