Northeast Ohio Medical University Comparative Medicine Unit, OH

Description of Elective Experience: 

The Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) Comparative Medicine Unit provides clinical veterinaary care to the laboratory animals used for research, teaching, and testing for 5 state universities in North East Ohio including NEOMED, Kent State University, University of Akron, Youngstown State University, and Cleveland State University.  The participating universities utilize a wide variety of different species including fish (multiple species), amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders), reptiles (snakes and lizards), birds, laboratory rodents, rabbits, sheep, swine, dogs, and non-human primates.  The student will have an opportunity to experince the veterinary care and husbandry activities of all of the forementioned species.  They will also have an opportunity to work with muliple IACUCs and their oversight of the research programs. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Each of the institutions mentioned above has an IACUC with administrative staff, vivarium husbandry staff including undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of roles, animal care staff, and veterinary technical staff.  each institution has cage washing equipment for the different brands of caging utilized (depending on species and scientific use).  The laboratory equipment avaialble within the institutions is widely varied depending on the research being performed. Interactive training with equipment can be arranged to suit a student's interests.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students will be expected to be actively present and engaged on Monday through Friday for up to 10 hours per day, actual hours will be discussed and agreed on.  Days or partial days off can be arranged to allow the student to take advantage of social and cultural events that are abundant in NE Ohio.  The student will not be expected to cover evening or weekend emergency cases unless they are interested in participating.
