Our clinic, Piedmont Equine Associates, is located in Madison, Georgia approximately 60 miles
east of Atlanta and 25 miles south of Athens. We are a five doctor practice that offers
ambulatory and in-clinic services including: extensive reproduction services (artificial
insemination, embryo transfer, ICSI, stallion collection/standing, and foaling services), surgery
(a wide array of procedures with the exception of colic surgery), lameness/sports medicine,
internal medicine and intensive care, dentistry, emergency services, and routine preventive care.
Externs will assist in management of hospitalized patients and administering treatments/performing
exams, assisting during surgeries/procedures and during ambulatory calls. The student will be
paired with a veterinarian each day for in-depth discussion of cases and subjects within
the field of equine veterinary medicine. When time allows, journal club is held and the student
is expected to participate by presenting a current article of their interest. Help with weekend
treatments of hospitalized cases is also expected.
Our clinic has 14 stalls, including a foaling stall and a stall outfitted with a sling support, a
covered lameness arena, multiple treatment areas with stocks, an operating room, as well as
extensive outdoor housing for non-critical patients. We also have a herd of ~70 embryo recipient
mares that additionally serve as a valuable educational resource for visiting students and interns.
We utilize digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy (1 and 3-meter), and shockwave daily as
well as in-house laboratory equipment, semen analysis equipment, and perform in-house
culture/sensitivity.
An extern student should expect to be at the clinic Monday - Friday 7:20am - 5pm with the understanding that, due to the nature of equine veterinary medicine, sometimes hours can be long especially during breeding season (January - May). Weekend assistance with treatments for hospitalized cases is also expected and would be Saturday and Sunday 7:30am - 12pm. If the student would like to be present for after hours emergencies (overnight and weekend), that can be arranged but is not expected. If the student requires an abscence or other changes to working hours, that can certainly be accomodated if given advanced notice.
We are unable to provide housing at this time but we are happy to provide assistance in finding appropriate housing in the area.
