Westerville Veterinary Clinic, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Exclusively canines and felines.  The medicine we practice is very thorough, at times calling on an Internal Medicine specialist for ultrasound and other consultation, or an orthopedic surgeon.  Our strengths are in our dedication to clients by handling routine care, along with grooming and boarding, yet being on call for them 24/7/365.  Our practice owner practiced exclusively emergency medicine, and emergency surgeries for the first 8 years of his career, and one of our associates has a lot to offer with her dental expertise and staying current with medicine.  In addition to the traditional business model of practicing high quality medicine (high quality medicine yields high quality profits), we have the only fully comprehensive health plan that we are aware of in the whole country. This plan covers emergencies and also covers the preventative medicine for a flat monthly rate, and is very popular.  We would love to have an enthusiastic student become exposed to our family environment, evolving medicine, and perhaps see a different and very effective way to enable the majority of clients to provide top of the line care to their pets.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Enthusiasm and attitude are of greatest importance.  We are open every day, often hours past when we intended to close because of emergencies, or just sheer volume of cases (we allow walk ins and drop offs as well as appointments).  We refuse to let a veterinary student become just a glorified tech or restrainer, we get them hands on whenever possible.  Hands on can be allowing them to review a case history and come up with their own diagnostic plan, followed by treatment plan, or it could be being gloved in on an elective gastropexy or other procedure.  Even a simple procedure like properly securing a Penrose drain into a wound can be an added value for any student, regardless of whether or not he/she saw it before or was allowed to help place it.  When there are emergencies that require fast action, we invite the student to stand back and learn while we act, until a patient is stabilized.  Examples include any cases of shock or hypovolemia, status epilepticus, and dyspnea.
