Animal Health and Medical Center, TX

Description of Elective Experience: 

Primarily dairy herd health medicine, but also a small amount of beef, goat, and sheep medicine.  Daily visits to dairy facilities performing palpation, health evaluation and nutritional consulting.  Also calf health on facilities that raise their own replacement heifers. The student will palpate cows, perform exams and assist in surgery. Work calves to include dehorns, vaccinations and tattoos. Assist in calf deliveries and other obstetric procedures. Fertility exam bulls. Evaluate and treat sick animals. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Full service free standing veteinary clinic with haul in practice as well as fully stocked field service trucks. Registered veterinary technicians and college student helpers. The clinic also has 2 small animal doctors and the large animal doctors participate in afterhours emergencies. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Full time participation possibly 40 -50 hours a week.

No cost to use a mobile home available with all amenities. No pets allowed.
