Student will work under the responsible direct supervision of the veterinary supervisor during all aspects of daily general practice. Student will perform patient exams, recommend diagnostics, interpret diagnostic findings, make clinical diagnosis, establish treatment plans, educate clients, Student will assist in surgery and dental procedures. Student will communicate with pet parents regarding diagnosis, recommendations and preventive health care. Student will observe daily interactions and communication of health care team professionals in an extremely busy and efficient well-managed practice.
Student will complete externship elective in a free-standing veterinary hospital facility, complete with three exam rooms, treatment room, surgical suite, office space, large reception area and kennel. Student will benefit from the support of 20 health care team members (including CVPM) with a combined 150+ years experience at this practice. Student will have access to a full in-house laboratory, digital radiography, ultrasonic scaler and high speed dental drill, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, class IV laser therapy machine. Student will experience working dog medicine as this practice holds the current contract for veterinary services for our county's police canine unit (approximately 40 dogs). Practice information management system is Cornerstone by Idexx.
Student is expected to work five days a week for a total average of 30-40 hours per week. Student will offer actual support to current veterinary team by following experiental outline described above under the responsible direct supervision of veterinary supervisor.
