Description of Elective Experience:
Externship with a private practice veterinary ophthalmology service
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:
- four veterinary ophthalmologists across three clinics (Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Yorktown)
- one veterinarian with practice limited to diseases of the eye
- one specialty intern veterinarian
- numerous support staff, including multiple veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians
- slit lamp biomicroscopy, indirect fundoscopy, applanation and rebound tonometers, operating microscope and phacomulsification, ocular ultrasonography, and electroretinography (ERG)
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
- primary goal is for the extern to practice veterinary ophthalmic examination and diagnostic skills
- appointment receiving and/or surgeries, Monday through Friday, approx 9am to 6pm
- appointment receiving Saturday approximately 9am to 12 noon
- extern has no primary on-call responsibilities, but may participate in emergency rounds
- time permitting, topic rounds
