Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Center, OH

Description of Elective Experience: 

Student will assist DVM with evaluation of avian & exotic animal patients; review treatment options, and communicate with clientele.  Student will train in associated laboratory techniques such as Gram stains, Cytology, in-house Complete Blood Count & Serum Chemistry analysis, and observe diagnostic testing services including ELISA and Molecular Diagnostic assays.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Hospital is fully equipped to see avian & exotic animal patients including anesthesia, ultrasonography, and endoscopy. Diagnostic cytology and hematology are an integral part of patient evaluation conducted in-house.  Hospital also has an associated molecular diagnostic laboratory that provides diagnostic testing services for certain viral, bacterial, and fungal agents affecting avian & exotic animals. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student is expected to work directly with attending DVM on a full-time basis; scheduled Monday through Friday.
