West Orange Animal Hospital, NJ

Description of Elective Experience:

West Orange Animal Hospital is a private small animal exclusive general practice. We provide comprehensive preventive care, internal medicine, and surgical services (dental procedures, spay/neuter, soft tissue, orthopedic, etc).

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We currently have 6 Veterinarians, 8 Veterinary Technicians and several veterinary assistants working with our team. We offer in-house lab work (CBC, Full Serum, Chemistries, Snap Tests, etc.) and multiple imaging modalities (digital radiography, digital dental radiography, and state of the art ultrasound with color flow doppler for performing echocardiograms).

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to be available to work between the hours of 8AM and 5PM M-F. We expect them to arrive ready to shadow and assist the Veterinarians during the day. Students will be encouraged to communicate with clients, independently workup cases based on the clinical presentation and formulate a medical plan including suggested ancillary testing and treatment options. They will have hands on experience in basic clinical skills under the supervision of veterinarians including: venipuncture, vaccinations, radiograph interpretation, as well as scrubbing in on surgeries and assisting with ultrasound/echocardiogram imaging. The ability to assist in surgeries will be based on the competency of the student with the health and safety of the patient being of paramount importance.
