Mad River Veterinary Hospital, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Our three doctor small animal practice is located in Springfield Ohio.  We will provide students with the opportunity to treat patients, assist in surgeries and dentals, and work one on one with our veterinarians.  We believe in quality medicine on a personal level, and strive to provide excellent care to our patients and their owners.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We currently have three doctors, ten RVT's, one assistant, and one CVMRT.  We provide our wonderful medical and support staff with the best tools so they can be successful in providing excellent care to our patients and their families.  This is why our brand new facility is fully equipped with modern, state-of-the-art technology, including: in house lab equipment, digital x-rays, ultrasound, high speed dental drill and dental x-rays, therapy laser, and Clientrax paperless records.  We are also opening a new rehabilitation facility in the coming month.  The rehab center will provide many types of rehabilitation therapy including a water treadmill, therapy pool, gym, chiropractics and acupuncture.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students will have the opportunity to be responsible for primary cases when appropriate, charting medical records, communicating directly with clients, assisting in surgery and dental procedures.  They will have daily discussions with veterinarians, and be able to work along side them as much as possible.  The student will work four weekdays from 8am-5pm and every other Saturday from 8-noon.  The days are flexible and can be discussed at the start of the Off-Site Elective experience.
