Description of Elective Experience:
The student will shadow and assist ambulatory racetrack veterinarian during the Saratoga race meet in Saratoga Springs, NY.
In racing thoroughbreds: lameness evaluation and diagnostics, upper airway evaluation, respiratory disease/infection management, emergency procedures and management, assist in minor surgical procedures. Management of cases including referral to hospitals or clinics.
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:
5 veterinarians, 5 veterinary assistants, digital radiography, video endoscopy, digital ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, lameness locator, LASER.
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
5 days per week (Wednesday through Sunday).
