Camp Pendleton Veterinary Treatment Facility (US Army), CA

Description of Elective Experience: 

On-the-job training and shadowing with Army Veterinary Corps officers and team, to include the Animal/Working dog mission and the Food Protection mission. Student may be working in the clinic helping to see patient appointments, assist with or conduct training for Military Working Dogs and their handlers, perform routine exams and preventive care on Military Working Dogs, assist in food protection and defense with the Food team, participate in public health areas, such as rabies bite reports or rabies advisory boards. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The clinic team consists of 2 Veterinary Corps Officers (veterinarians), 1 civilian veterinarian (GP), 3 technicians, and one receptionist. The clinic is outfitted with 3 exam rooms, an OR, surgery prep/dental station, basic diagnostic laboratory, pharmacy, ultrasound, and radiology. There is a comprehensive library with a wide array of veterinary textbooks and army regulations. There is an opportunity to shadow the Army VCO at the Marine Mammal Program and the VCO at the Lab Animal Research position as well. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student is expected to be present 40 hours a week (Monday through Friday, 0800-1600) and the time will be split between the animal mission and the food mission, depending on the day. The student will mostly be in a shadowing position, but may be able to directly support with inspections, training events, working dog exams. The student is also expected to engage and participate in Army physical fitness training and other Army training events/activities. 

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Housing will be arranged by the student through the Army, at DoD approved hotels on or off base. This will be paid for by the DoD.
