Animal Clinic of Chardon, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Student will have the opportunity to participate in collecting and recording an accurate patient history, performing physical exams and recording of normal and abnormal findings, making a list of differentials, and assisting in the workup and treatment of patients. This will all be done under the direct supervision of an experienced DVM (with anywhere from 12-25+ years of experience).  Additionally, effective communication with pet parents will be taught and put to use - such as the delivery of discharge instructions. Pharmaceuticals, their uses and prescription indications will be learned.   End-of-life and euthanasia processes will also be included in learning experience as this is one of the most valued services we offer. Technical skill learning opportunities will be available, such as phlebotomy, injections, IV catheter placement, operating basic medical equipment. Advanced skill opportunities such as endotracheal tube placement, anesthetic monitoring, and surgical assistance will also be available.  We are a Fear Free, Cat Friendly, and AAHA accredited hospital. All of these require advanced techniques and standards.  We pride ourselves in a supportive environment where everyone works together for a common passion, purpose, and core values.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have a very high staff to doctor ratio so that our DVM Team can put their skills and education to the highest use. Several experienced Veterinary Nurses - both credentialed (RVT) and non credentialed will be available for support and learning. At minimum 1 DVM will always be available for direct support and and to provide hands on learning opportunities. We are paperless practice utilizing IDEXX Cornerstone and IDEXX lab suite.  We perform a % of COHATS (oral treatment and care).  Therapeutic lasers are on-site.   Comprehensive anesthetic monitoring devices and techniques. We utilize multiple methods of technology including chat, text, video, and other means of communication with clients.  Will learn Feline Friendly and FAS reducing handling and care - including the use of pre-visit medications and/or visit medications/sedation - all to provide a better experience. If desired, business operations, financials, and management (leadership) skills can be developed.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We are flexible with needed or required hours. We are open 5 days a week M-F. Late days are M/W until 8PM. Depending on level of experience will be combination of shadowing and actual support. We believe that the best way to learn how to be a veterinarian, is to be given the opportunity to be one (with direct support and observation by an experience DVM).

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

The DVM owners have a private room and bath at their home 8 miles from the hospital. If a "shared" housing situation isn't a concern, we are more than willing to host someone in our home.  Only costs would be food.  Transportation would be needed.  We may be able to accommodate pets depending on situation and a conversation but is not guaranteed.
