Well-qualified externship candidates should have a declared interest in equine sport horse and reproductive medicine, have career ambitions to join an ambulatory practice, and have demonstrated experience in handling and assisting with treatment of horses. Externs are expected to assist the veterinarians in daily work, and to be available for emergency calls at night and on weekends. Externs should also have a good work ethic and positive attitude. Successful completion of an externship at ODEA is a pre-requisite for those candidates interested in pursuing a future internship with our practice.
Old Dominion Equine offers a hands-on externship for students seeking experience in equine ambulatory medicine. Our office features a fully stocked equine pharmacy, in-house laboratory, and digital media viewing room. The practice operates five field vehicles equipped with digital radiography, digital ultrasound, endoscopy, gastroscopy and shockwave. The primary emphasis of our practice is to provide complete ambulatory veterinary care to the sport horse, thoroughbred, and breeding farms of central Virginia. Sport horse and lameness work includes all levels of hunters, jumpers, seventers, dressage horses, and thoroughbred racehorses. Reproductive caseloads include work at thoroughbred and warmblood breeding farms, routine mare and stallion management, as well as advanced assisted reproductive techniques.

Application
Prospective externs should submit a resume and cover letter to the practice, along with a completed copy of our Externship Questionnaire. There is no deadline for submitting an application. However, openings do tend to fill quickly, often before the start of the academic year for which you are applying. While we do give scheduling priority to 4th year students, externships are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please forward all application inquiries to Dr. Lauren M. Gallaspy, DVM at staff@olddominionequine.com.
The practice is open to externs from March through October. Externships typically last 2-3 weeks.
Housing is available at no cost to externs, although students are free to arrange their own accommodations if desired. We do not allow students to bring their pets.
