New England Animal Medical Center offers 1 or 2 week rotations in emergency & critical care, surgery and general practice. Clinical year students are invitied to participate in case evaluation, work-up and treatment with the oversight of senior staff and specialists.
New England Animal Medical Center consists of a 24 hour emergency and critical care service, specialty services including internal medicine and surgery and a general practice. The ECC staff currently consists of 8 doctors (1 ACVECC diplomates, 8 internship trained veterinarians) and 4 house officers (1 ACVECC resident, 3 rotating interns). Our speciality staff consists of 2 ACVS diplomates, 1 board eligible surgeon, 2 ACVS resident, and 1 part-time ACVIM diplomats. In addition, we staff 2 cardiologists who do mobile consults two days a week and boarded radiologists who review our films, CT scans and contrast studies electronically via our IDEXX digital radiograph system.
Students have access to a veterinary medical library.
Our clinical year student externs rotate through day (ICU) shifts and evening ER receiving shifts. Our intention is to maximize your exposure to cases during shifts where caseload is higher (weekends, evenings and holidays). Depending on your interests and time allotted to the externship, rotation through either surgery or general practice can be arranged. During the externship students may speak with clients, examine patients, formulate plans for diagnostic workups and participate in the diagnostic and treatment procedures. Direct supervision with one of our staff doctors or specialists will provide support to the student and aid in the learning process. There are twice daily case rounds (8A and 6P), weekly intern rounds and weekly ECC resident rounds that the externs are encouraged to attend.
