Experiences gained at York Animal Hospital will include much hands on participation in the aspects of a food animal, zoo and wildlife species veterinary practice. The student will treat, anesthetize, perform surgery and develop preventative and outbreak programs under the direct guidance of a veterinarian. The student will also develop animal welfare and public perception of zoos and animal agriculture knowledge.
Experiences will include the overseeing of animal welfare in the public setting of two county fairs. The collection of samples for drug testing, the public perception of animal welfare and the knowledge of what drugs may or may not be used in the given situations such as close to slaughter, while keeping animal welfare a priority. The monitoring of animals for possible zoonotic disease and the programs in place to help prevent such an occurrence. Included are teaching opportunities for the public perception of farms and agriculture.
The overseeing of exotic animal welfare and treatment of a drive through zoo, including both domestic and zoo species. The development of preventative medicine programs, treatment of sick or injuries species, the monitoring of diseases such as HPAI and the development of programs in case of an outbreak following the USDA guidelines.
The student will evaluate swine herd settings including environmental, disease, swine welfare and public perception of a large scale swine operation. The student will perform pregnancy herd checks, evaluate nutrition, address environmental and animal welfare concerns as well as public perception of swine operations.
The experience includes a fully equipped veterinary truck complete with ultrasound, medications and surgical equipment. Binoculars for evaluating zoo species while minimizing stress to such species. Dehorning equipment, large animal dental equipment, necropsy kit, hoof knives, and surgical kits will also be used by the student.
The veterinary hospital is a full service hospital including radiology, dental radiology, ultrasound, in house blood machines, microscope, veterinary software and a large animal ward for hospitalized patients.
The support staff includes two RVTs and 3 veterinary assistances as well as 2 receptionist and 2 office managers to provide support and guidance for the student. Staff are well trained and have 30 plus years of experience in the performance of record keeping large animal medicine and surgery.
The student will perform physical examinations, herd evaluations, animal welfare assessments, public perception assessments, determine appropriate anesthesia, develop preventative and outbreak protocols for a given species and administer and perform surgery under the guidance of a accredited veterinarian and support staff.
The hours will include Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on call emergency work, especially during the county fairs. Students will monitor barns at the fairs daily.
Student is expected to be ready to practice medicine and surgery under veterinary guidance and have a strong interest in large animal, especially swine and zoo species.
Sperate housing is included as a courtesy, including kenneling of pets, a fully functioning and furnished house, and large back yard, attached to the veterinary hospital. 20 acres woods for exploration a campfire and wood at the veterinarian's residence. Student may either consume meals with the veterinarian family or choose to cook meals.
