Brickell Bay Animal Hospital, FL

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a five-doctor, small animal veterinary hospital located in downtown Miami.  We are open six days per week and see appointments, walk -ins, emergencies, and perform surgeries and manage hospitalized cases.  Our cases include opthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, clinical pathology, dentistry, surgery (dental and soft tissue) and internal medicine workups as well as preventative/wellness medicine. Students will gain practical experience by working along-side our veterinarians shadowing them in exam rooms, working up cases with them, reviewing and documenting electronic medical records, interpreting diagnostics, scrubbing in for surgeries and participating in daily rounds.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have one Certified Veterinary Technician on staff, ten technicians, five customer service representatives, and a practice manager.  The owners of the hospital include Dr. Greg Frishman (LSU class of 2000), and his wife, Carla who is the hospital administrator.  They are actively involved in the day-to-day operations at the hospital.  The hospital has a large collection of small animal veterinary books.  We have three anesthesia machines, an Aesculight Laser machine, Midmark M-11 autoclave, Nomad handheld digital dental radiography, Fovea digital radiology, Reichert Tono-pen, three microscopes, and eighteen workstations with Avimark Practice Management Software installed for electronic medical records.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Our hours of operation are 8am-6:30pm.  The student will be able to shadow all of our veterinarians and be encouraged to practice as much as hands-on as they feel comfortable with.
