Animal Emergency & Critical Care, AL

Description of Elective Experience:

The externs will engage in any and all ER cases with a hands on approach. They will work with our ER DVM's on diagnosing emergency conditions, developing treatment plans and learning effective communication skills. Hands on skills that may be practiced include examinations, anesthesia, surgical procedures, ultrasound and catheterization.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

The externs will work closely with our experienced ER clinicians and our licensed veterinary technicians. Our clinic is equipped with state of the art surgical tools, ultrasound, digital radiography and patient monitoring devices.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The externs are required to work no more than 35-40/week. Days of the week are flexible but nights and weekends are our busiest times which allow for more clinical experience. They are expected to take a hands on approach to all cases and engage with the ER DVM's. We expect them to come ready to learn and ask informed questions.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

There is a stipend available from NVA to help cover costs while at AECC.
