Summit Bridge Veterinary Hospital is a general practice that also houses Cheyla's Rescue Foundation. Students will have the opportunity to shadow veterinarians as they perform general practice appointments, emergencies, dentistry, and surgeries. In addition, these veterinarians also practice shelter medicine on the in-house rescue pets. This is a good opportunity to see how a general practice operates as well as a rescue organization.
SBVH is fully staffed and offers in house laboratory equipment, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, and an extensive in-house pharmacy. Cheyla's rescue takes in strays and owner surrenders and adopts out approximately 250-300 cats/year as well as 30-40 dogs.
Students would be expected to attend 35-40 hours a week. Operational hours are 7 days a week, 10-14 hours a day and students can partner with different vets on various shifts as best accommodates their learning experience. Students can shadow as well as provide support as they feel comfortable. We have had some externs do castrations and OHE's on our rescue pets, as well as mass removals and enucleations depending on need during their externship. Students have been allowed to take responsibility for appointments from beginning to end, based on their comfort level and ability as well as partake in treatment plans for hospitalized patients.
