Uptown Animal Hospital and Urgent Care, WA

Description of Elective Experience:

The student will be exposed to a busy general practice and a busy Urgent Care.  Our Urgent Care provides most services that a 24 hour emergency hospital provides - surgeries, diagnostics, and treatments. We partner with our sister hospital, Puget Sound Veterinary Specialists and Emergency (PSVSE), so there will be opportunities for exposure to a specialty practice.  Emphasis will be placed on correct record keeping, client interaction, developing a diagnostic tree, developing a treatment plan, drug calculations, and integration into a team.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are an AAHA certified practice.  Full-service surgery, ultrasound, radiology, full-service lab, pharmacy.   We have 3 GP doctors and 3 Urgent Care doctors.  Through PSVSE:  CT and MRI, endoscopy, ICU, and specialists in dentistry, surgery, neurology, internal medicine and ophthalmology.  Our GP and Urgent Care teams consist of 1 veterinarian, 1 LVT, and 2 assistants.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We tailor the experience to the interests of the student - we are a hands-on program.  Students will get practice in blood draws, catheterization (urinary and iv), client education, how to handle angry people and unfortunate situations, what to do if you make a mistake. They will scrub into surgeries and help with anesthetics.  We emphasize complete and legal record keeping and full disclosure, and honest interactions with clients.  The student will be given cases and will be expected to develop the case from start to finish (with help and supervision, of course).  Schedule to be determined.  Approximately 40 hr/week.
