Cold Spring Animal Clinic, LLC, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Students will be immersed in the whirlwind of high volume companion animal medicine. We are a three doctor, appointment-based clinic and we see some urgent and/or emergent cases. We also have scheduled surgery and dental days amd make house calls on occasion. At the comfort of the student and veterinarian, the student will have the opportunity to see appointments, perform physical exams, help with diagnostics, and participate in formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. On surgery days, students will help calculate anesthetic protocols, help with surgery prep, and assist in surgery. They will also help with post-surgical management. The student will be encouraged to think independently to work through cases under the guidance of the veterinarian. If interested, the student may also see the business side of practice management.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our warm, welcoming, fun staff of 19 are ready to assist in all cases and procedures. We have in-house IDEXX CBC, chemistry, and urinalysis analyzers. We also have digital radiographs, an ultrasound (albeit dated), and a dental unit. Periodically, an internist comes to the clinic for ultrasound consults.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students would be expected to be in the clinic from 9-5 Monday-Friday (or a Saturday could be substituted for a weekday). We are flexible. The first day would function as a shadowing day. After that, based on the comfort level and confidence of the student and the discretion of the clinician, the student would be actively participating in appointments, client communication diagnostics, procedures, hospitalizations, and surgeries. The goal would be to get the student thinking and working through cases like he/she would in practice.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Students are welcome to stay in the guest bedroom in our home which includes TV, bed, two dressers, a desk, and an attached full bathroom (shower, bathtub, toilet, sinks). Also, they would have access to the rest of the house downstairs including the kitchen, laundry room, basement with a treadmill, and a small set of weights. This would come at no cost. Food would not be provided. We have three cats who prefer to rule the house, so no other pets would be allowed to join.
