Description of Elective Experience:
- Assists veterinarian and veterinary technicians with animal intake examinations and follow up exams of admitted patients and education animal ambassadors
- Assists with radiographs and lab specimen collection and interpretation of lab values
- Restrains wildlife species for physical examination and treatments
- Observes surgical procedures involving anesthesia of wildlife patients
- Covers at minimum one four-hour shift/week on our community information line
- Doses and administers medications; provides nursing care to patients
- Performs weekly visual assessment of pre-release facility patients
- Responsible for presenting approved research project upon completion of externship and lead two wildlife focused journal club discussions for hospital staff and volunteers
- Rotates through animal husbandry areas at the education and pre-release facilities
- Maintains constant focus on safe workplace practices
- Develops an understanding of and adherence to federal, state and local wildlife policies
- Personally commits to our Core Values and organizational policies and procedures
- Performs additional duties as assigned Necessary Knowledge and Experience
- Currently enrolled as a first or second year veterinary student in an accredited veterinary program Strong interest in pursuing a career in wildlife or exotic veterinary medicine
