Description of Elective Experience:
Sentinel Veterinary Specialists and Emergency is a privately owned 24/7 emergency and specialty (critical care, anesthesia, and surgery) hospital in Missoula, MT.
- Students will work with the emergency team in all aspects of care including: rounds, client communication, physical exams, diagnostics, treatment plans, hospitalized case management, surgeries, and other emergency procedures.
- Students will have the option to spend time with the specialty services if desired.
- We serve a large clientele of dog and cat owners spanning western Montana, Idaho, and eastern Washington. Providing a spectrum of care is an essential part of our practice.
Missoula is located in western Montana. We are a small university town surrounded by mountains, rivers, hiking, fishing, skiing/snowboarding, and pretty much any outdoor activity you can imagine. Caroline Buisson, DVM (ER Medical Director) is a 2005 alum of OSU CVM and is excited to invite fellow Buckeyes to our practice for externship.

Our hospital is fully equipped with the following:
- Fully staffed with well trained LVTs
- Diagnostic imaging - radiographs, ultrasound, CT, fluoroscopy
- Comprehensive in house laboratory
- Endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy
- Orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery suites
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
Students will be responsible for:
- Assisting with all patients, and taking primary case responsibility when deemed appropriate
- Charting medical records and communicating with clients, both in person and via phone
- Participate in daily rounds
- Assist in surgeries
- Develop diagnostic and treatment plans
- Perform physical exams
- Assist in procedures
- Build technical skills
