Cleveland Metroparks Zoo offers 4 week externships to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students who have an interest in exotic animal medicine. The externship will cover all aspect of the medical care of the zoo's 2,500 individual animals. Students will be able to particiapte in many procedures and will be responsible for helping with record keeping, treatments, and laboratory procedures. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is staffed by three veterinarians and five registered technicians. The hospital opened in 2005 and features four rooms visible to the public (imaging center, large animal treatment room, small animal treatment room, and surgery room). Available diagnostic equipment includes digital radiology, ultrasound, thermal imaging camera, CT scanner, and endoscopy (rigid and flexible).
Student responsibilites include helping w/ procedures, treatments, records, and laboratory procedures. It is expected that the student work five, 8 hour days. Typically these days are Monday - Friday from 8am - 4:30pm. However students will have some flexibility in designing their schedule to fit around the available case load.
