The Greensboro Science Center (GSC) is an AZA/AAM accredited zoo, aquarium, and science museum located in Greensboro, NC. Our 22-acre zoo cares for an expansive collection including red pandas, okapi, pygmy hippos, tigers, servals, maned wolves, cassowary, komodo dragons, and many other species. Our 36,000 sq ft aquarium includes a collection of large and small sharks, multiple ray species, fresh and salt water fish, otters, penguins, and small primates, among others. The GSC is proud to offer 2 and 4 week externships to veterinary students in their final clinical year. All externs will have the opportunity to participate in the day to day care of the animals in the collection, including but not limited to, preventative medicine, recheck, and emergency exams on a variety of species from multiple taxa. We attempt to offer as many hands-on opportunities as we are able too along with didactic educational items such as journal club and zoo specific lectures as time allows.
The GSC veterinary team is made up of 1 full time veterinarian and 1 full time vet tech and 1 part time veterinary assistant. We are a fully functional hospital equipped with a full treatment room, radiology suite, surgical suite, necropsy room, two quarantine rooms, one medical holding space, a pharmacy, and conference room. We have onsite capabilities for radiographs (both in hospital and mobile throughout the park), ultrasound, variety of scoping, invasive and non-invasive surgeries, as well as in-house and send out diagnostics.
During their externship, all externs will be expected to be at the GSC for ~40 hours per week (M-F) and are welcome to be on-call for emergencies over the weekend as they are able. While here, externs are expected to contribute to cases, work side by side with the vet staff (under their guidance), practice their technical skills, work through cases alongside the veterinarian, practice medical record writing, and participate in all didactic education fully.
