The Colorado Workers' Compensation Act requires student interns to be covered by workers' compensation insurance. Ohio State is not able to add students to its institutional workers' compensation policy. Prior to scheduling an externship in Colorado, students must work with their externship supervisor to ensure that Colorado worker's compensation insurance requirements will be met. Proof of worker's compensation coverage must be sent to Dr. Emma Read for verification. If a student is not covered by a worker's compensation policy for their externship they will not earn academic credit for the rotation. Description of Elective Experience: 

CityVet’s externships are customizable programs that are 2-weeks in length where you can work alongside our team and the owner veterinarian to experience real hands-on expertise. We tailor our program to the wants/needs of the student. They may get exposure to surgery, wellness exams, client communication, blood work, diagnostics, technical skills, working through cases with the doctor, etc.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The practice is fully staffed with a Lead Vet, Associate Vet, Techs, Practice Manager, Front Desk staff, and Regional Operations Manager. The clinic has lots of great equipment and resources to support the students learning goals, the biggest one being an ultrasound machine that the student will get to utilize with the doctor. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

9am-5pm. Option to stay late since this clinic has expanded into urgent care hours. Student is also welcome to come in on Saturday or just do a Monday-Friday schedule.

Shadowing and as much hands on experience as the student and doctor feel comfortable with- this could be scrubbing in and shadowing surgery, working through cases together, blood draws, etc.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

We do not offer student housing, but we do offer a stipend to help offset travel expenses.
