Description of Elective Experience: 

Wildbase Hospital International Veterinary Student Internship

Intern will be working and learning within the day-to-day activities of the Wildbase Hospital, alongside Massey veterinary students.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Wildbase Hospital is part of the Wildbase Research Group within Tāwharau Ora, School of Veterinary Science, Massey University New Zealand. The hospital treats ~600 native patients and ~350 owner birds, reptiles and amphibians per year. Wildbase also operates a wildlife pathology service in conjunction with the NZ department of Conservation, while not the central purpose of the internship, the intern will have exposure to this service as well. The Wildbase Hospital is located adjacent to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Massey with access to the associated resources. further information about Wildbase can be found at wildbase.massey.ac.nz

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

During the internship the student will attend Monday to Friday 8am till 5pm with breaks taken around procedures to achieve a 7.5hr work day. No afterhours or weekend expectations. While here they will be working with the Wildbase Resident rostered on clinic and the 5 full-time equivalent veterinary technical staff, and overseen by one of 2 experience wildlife/avian vets. Given the endangered nature of most NZ wildlife they will be closely supervised at all times.
