Watertown Animal Hospital, NY

Description of Elective Experience: 

The student would spend part of the time riding with a large animal veterinarian and part of the time in the small animal hospital.  Students would be exposed to dairy production medicine on small (<50 cow) Amish diaries and organic diaries to large (>1500 cow) family run dairies.  Clients also include pleasure horses, families, goats and few swine. The small animal hospital caters to dogs and cats. Students would be exposed to dental radiology, digital radiology, and general small animal practice as well as surgery.  Surgeries range from spats and Reuters to amputation, enucleation, and abdominal exploration.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

6 veterinarians, 4 technicians, digital and dental radiology, in house laboratory, VIN, ultrasound, and more.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students would be expected to observe for a full day - 8am to 6:30pm in the hospital and 7:30am until done for large animal. Students will be expected to help examine, develop diagnostic plans, and treat medical cases. Students will be allowed to assist in surgery.  And much more!

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

In-law apartment at contact's home. Includes private bed and bath as well as range and partial kitchen. Pets would be difficult as contact has 2 Labradors and 3 cats.
