Halifax Humane Society, FL

Description of Elective Experience:

This rotation is focused on providing students a well-rounded education in the expectations of the shelter veterinarian. The student should expect to become comfortable to competent in high-volume, high-quality spay and neuter surgeries in a low-stress environment. Students will also have the opportunity to practice their physical exam skills, triage skills, and diagnostic and treatment plan skills. Students will learn real world concerns in terms of operating on a budget for animal care. There is also the potential to experience first-hand the importance of cruelty case proceedings (exam, documentation, etc).

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Halifax Humane Society is an open-intake shelter that receives over 13,000 animals a year. Our facility can house approximately 350 animals at a time. Our on-site veterinary infirmary boasts a surgical suite that can accommodate two surgeries at a time. We routinely perform in house fecal exams, limited blood work, urinalysis, and dermatologic work-ups.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The minimum time required for rotation is two weeks. Students can be accommodated for longer with prior approval. A maximum of two students will be hosted. Students will be exposed to spay and neuter of small and large breed dogs, cats, and rabbits. Students will have the opportunity to perform these surgeries under the supervision of the doctor. The goal for students who complete a two week rotation would be 30 surgeries during their externship (more or less will be provided based on student’s ability, time constraints, etc.). If interested, students will be provided with the opportunity to observe behavioral testing (SAFERS); join an Animal Control Officer for a ride-along; and shadow in the intake department. The doctor will also supply daily rounds topic on common shelter medicine topics.

Students report Monday through Friday to work directly with the veterinarian usually 40 hours. Saturday and Sunday responsibilites include administering morning medications, which is approximately 1 hour. Students will be actively participating in all activities not shadowing.
