Tri County Animal Clinic, Inc., OH

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a four doctor mixed animal practice in Wayne County, Ohio.  A significant portion of the practice is bovine reproduction and herd health work.  In addition, we also work routinely with equine, goats, sheep and alpacas and typically have 3 of the 4 veterinarians working out of their mobile units on farm visits.  The practice generally encompasses three counties with much of the mobile services being large dairy farms and then also the backyard client.  Typically, the fourth veterinarian is scheduled in the office serving the companion animal needs of the practice.  The clinic is located in West Salem, Ohio and serves many of the rural as well as the local Amish communities in the area.  As a student, you will be observing and participating where appropriate with the numerous responsibilities of the veterinarian that you are scheduled to shadow for the day - working with both the large and small veterinarians throughout the course of your experience with us.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Tri County Animal Clinic, Inc. currently employs four veterinarians and seven support/staff members. Along with having fully equipped mobile units, the practice utilizes ultrasound machines for reproductive herd health management and an Idexx catalyst machine for in-house blood work.  Companion animal services include routine surgery and dental capabilities, digital x-rays, as well as some elective surgical procedures including C-sections and mass removals.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student is expected to be available when the practice is open: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8-5 and Tuesday and Thursday 8-5:30.  When shadowing the large animal veterinarians, it is not uncommon for routine herd checks to be scheduled at 7 or 7:30 a.m. at which time the student would be expected to be available.  On-call experience is an option but is not mandatory, as is Saturday and Sunday shadowing.  Those factors can be discussed between the veterinarian on call and the student once the clinical experience is in place.
