Description of Elective Experience:
Students will spend 2-8 weeks assisting the veterinarians and zoo staff with all aspects of clinical zoological medicine, including but not limited to: daily animal care, medical rounds, general medicine and surgery, clinical pathology, radiology, pathology, and record keeping. Students are encouraged to make use of the literature and other resources available to prepare for procedures and current cases.

3 veterinarians, 2 certified veterinary technicians.
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
- Observes and assists with medical, surgical and preventative medicine procedures.
- Observes and assists with necropsy procedures.
- Observes and assists with medical treatments.
- Assists in preparation for procedures.
- Assists in clean up after medical procedures.
- Assists veterinarians and technicians in daily tasks.
- Attends morning meetings with veterinarian and veterinary technicians.
- Conducts literature reviews as needed to be prepared for daily cases and procedures.
- Completes at least one project or presentation during their preceptorships. Extended preceptorships may require more than one project or presentation.
- Completes daily personal log.
- Performs clinical laboratory procedures as requested by technicians.
- Exposed to exhibit design, research projects, animal training for medical procedures and nutritional evaluations.
Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):
We have housing available near the zoo. Cost of housing is $100/wk, with a $200 deposit that is refunded at the time of departure (contingent on house condition). Housing is non-smoking, no pets allowed.
