The elective experience will be split between two Pet Partners hospitals. Boone Animal Hospital is a progressive general practice that houses a surgeon in a suburb of Chicago, Western Springs. City Pet Hospital was a feline only practice currently transitioning into a multi-pet small animal practice in the heart of downtown Chicago. Both practices are Feline Friendly and Fear Free and have opportunity for routine wellness and complex medical case loads. City Pet has a large feline dental case load while Boone has a mix of feline and canine dental and surgical procedures.
Both practices have acsess to a moderate clinical reference librabry, VIN, and our Pet Partners internal version of VIN called Discourse. The extern will work with one doctor, two technicians, and one CSR at City Pet. At Boone, the extern will work with five general practicioners, two surgeons, eight technicians, and 8 CSR staff. Both hospitals are fully staffed with progressive anesthesic, surgical/dental equipment, ultrasound, digital radiography, and medical equipment such as tonopen and cryoprobe. Boone also has surgical laser, class IV therapy laser, accupuncture, and massage.
Both clinics are open Monday through Saturday. A combination of weekday and weekend hours per week to equal 40 hours per week of experience. The main part of the externship will be shadowing. However, we have a guest surgeon visiting Boone the second week to build surgical skills with our GP's in soft palate resections and abdominal surgical techniques. We are working with rescues for the gastopexy procedures and can have the extern provide the OHE or castration to these patients. The guest surgeon will also be working with our in-house surgeon on newer ACL repair techniques for shadowing.
