Description of Elective Experience: 

The Externship at Advanced Veterinary Care Group will give each extern as much hands-on exposure as possible.  The extern will be exposed to the daily challenges of being a veterinarian, from seeing appointments, performing diagnostics, formulating treatment plans, proposing the plans to the client, and acting on those treatment plans.  Plus, at Advanced Veterinary Care Group, we perform advanced surgeries that the vast majority of general medical practices to do perform.  Each extern will be able to assist in these surgeries and be provided with education and mentorship.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Advanced Veterinary Care Group has DVMs, 2 LVTs, and a certified Ultrasound Sonographer.  They have advanced imaging, (including U/S, MRI, and digital radiography).  They perform Orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries (including MRIT, TTA-R, avulsion fracture repair, limp fracture repair, patellar luxation repair, splenectomies, adrenalectomies, insulinoma removal, thyroidectomy, and many other advanced surgeries), They also perform ECGs, Peircardiocentesis (ultrasound-guided), patent ductus arteriosis ligation and persistent right aortic arch ligation. They also have a CO2 laser for soft palate resection, stenotic nares, and many other surgeries.  Advanced Veterinary Care Group also does stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma therapy.  They also perform rehabilitation with a therapy laser, hydrotherapy, and trigger point therapy.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Each student will learn how to work the exam rooms, run diagnostics, formulate treatment plans, communicate with clients, and assist in surgery.  The externs will learn not only veterinary skills but also technical skills.  They will be supervised and mentored at all times while at the hospital from 8-5 M-F.
