Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a busy 4 doctor general practice where you will experience the day-to-day life of a small animal general practitioner. You will participate in working up cases during office appointments and will have the opportunity to take client histories, perform exams and discuss exam findings with your supervising DVM, give rational for choosing and interpreting diagnostics, practice record keeping and develop treatment plans for patients during wellness and sick pet appointments. You will have the opportunity to help develop anesthesia plans and participate in surgeries and dental procedures.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have an excellent team of support staff including 3 RVT's and experienced veterinarians that love to teach! Externs will work beside a senior clinician when managing patient care during exams and participating in surgeries. We have a full IDEXX in-house lab suite (chemistry, hematology, urinalysis), DR digital radiography, advanced dental equipment with DR dental radiography, ultrasound, tonopen, fully equipped surgical suite, and cloud-based digital records (ezyVet). We have an extensive library of veterinary textbooks and online resources that you may utilize to help research cases.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Our office hours are 8:00 AM- 6:00 PM Monday through Friday and 8:00 AM-12:00 PM on Saturdays. Surgery/dentistry is performed in the mornings on Tuesday through Friday. Student externs are expected to be available to see patients alongside a mentoring DVM for approximately 40 hours each week and a schedule can be tailored to help meet the individual goals of the extern.
