Ag Vets is a food animal, ambulatory practice consisting of 9 veterinarians in southeastern PA. The majority of our work (85%) is focused on serving the various dairy producers in our region. However, our service also includes beef, swine, and small ruminants to varying degrees. We provide generalized herd health and surgical services expected of a traditional food animal practice. We have also placed an emphasis on financial planning and records management as a value-added service for our clientele. Embryo transfer and laproscopic surgical techniques are also unique services we provide in our practice area. Students would be allowed to shadow and/or participate with the bulk of our veterinarians as we serve our varied client-base.
A full library is maintained in our facility, and various presentations can be presented to students on our slower workdays. Further, we maintain a functional labratory that allows for basic microbiology and clinical pathology. We have 4 team members that comprise our support staff, and provide lodging for any student under our care.
Responsibilities vary depending on the veterinarian and work-load that they would be shadowing each particular day. However, in general, we are looking to host students with a keen interest in dairy/production medicine. An application is required prior to acceptance into our program (found at agvets.com) to further select the best fit for our 4 slots/year. Most of us are excited to go to work each day and expect the same of the students that enter our program. A willingness to work, a persistent curiosity, a great attitude, and flexibility surrounding the unique scenarios presented with ambulatory practice is expected. We typically work 8-12 hour days, Monday -Friday. Emergency/after-hours work varies week to week but is always available for students (for the entirety of their stay).
Housing is provided, free of charge, at our main office. Students get their own room with a fold-out couch, computer, and access to a full bath, washer/dryer, and break room. Internet is also provided. With the current COVID restrictions, housing has been altered and is now a private, 3 bedroom townhome 15 miles away from the practice.
