Description of Elective Experience: 

Extern will gain experience in all aspects of equine practice, including both inpatient and ambulatory cases. Bi-weekly rounds address a variety of topics in general practice.  Extern will spend time rotating among veterinary staff.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Allegheny Equine is a five veterinarian equine practice located in western Pennsylvania 20 miles east of Pittsburgh. Practice is based out of an 18 stall facility that supports in case and out patient care. Facility offers ICU, isolation, breeding management including stallion collection, and an in house lab. Diagnostic equipment includes digital radiology, digital ultrasound, video endoscopy / gastroscopy, ocular tonometry and lameness locator. Staff includes certified chiropractor/acupuncturist.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Extern will be accompany veterinarians during the work week (Monday-Friday).  Extern will be given the opportunity, but will not be required, to accompany emergency staff on evening and weekend emergency calls.  Student will be encouraged to support veterinarians as his or her level of comfort as the situation allows.  Student will be exposed to veterinary practice for approximately 50 hours per week.

On site furnished appartment provided at no cost to student.  No pets please
