Description of Elective Experience: 

The veterinary student will gain experience in the daily life of a small animal general practice veterinarian. The student will take the role of the veterinarian under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. The student's role will include receiving histories from clients, performing general physical exams as well as orthopedic and neurological exams on patients that indicate this need. Formulating problem lists, diagnostic plans and based on the results, they will formulate a treatment protocol with the attending clinician. The student will be performing routine vaccinations and educating clients about immunity and vaccine protocols. The student will be performing and reading diagnostic tests with a veterinarian. Our clinic has a new Idexx DR-50 digital x-ray machine, ultrasound, full Idexx blood and urinalysis machines, and a state of the art surgical suite. The student under the supervision of a veterinarian and authorization by the client will be performing surgical procedures like spays, neuters, mass removals, etc.  The student will be leading the conversations in client communications and education of diseases. At the end of each day, the attending clinician and student will round about the day's cases and this will be a time to dive deeper into disease processes and other topics. All in all, the student will be performing the tasks a small animal GP veterinarian would every day in practice.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The student will have a multitude of resources to expand their clinical knowledge like: textbooks, formularies, Internet site access, attending clinician knowledge, and technical staff knowledge. The clinic is currently staffed with eleven employees. There are two veterinarians, seven technicians, and two receptionists/office manager. Our office currently has, digital radiographs, ultrasound, Idexx blood and urinalysis machines, surgical suite, cold laser therapy, microscopes for cytology and other diagnostic tests, fully stocked pharmacy, patient preventatives, and specialized equipment for various sedated procedures.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The student will be expected to complete 40-50 hours per week. The student will work Monday through Friday each week. The vet student will be taking on the role of the veterinarian with direct supervision by the attending clinician.
