Animal And Avian Medical Center, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Animal And Avian Medical Center is a 6 DVM private practice located in Brunswick, Ohio (20 min SW of Cleveland).  Our veterinarians treat a large variety of species including dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and pot-bellied pigs, and reptiles.  Our newly renovated hospital is well equipped with in-house lab, digital x-ray and dental x-ray, ultrasound, rigid endoscopy, and more.  Our team based care will allow a student to learn to appreciate the wide variety of personalities that bring care to our patients and clients.  The high quality medical care, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dental services, and bird / small mammal / and exotic services that we offer to our clients is generally only outmatched by referral clinics.  This experience will allow a student to get a realistic appreciation of how a busy, small animal and exotic practice, that offers a large variety of services to a large variety of species, operates.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

6 DVM, 9 RVT, 21 support staff.  Idexx and Abaxis in-house lab, Digital x-ray, dental x-ray, ultrasound, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, and more.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The experience can be adjusted to the students' areas of interest (ex. exotics or surgery) and educational requirements.  The student will spend time shadowing multiple veterinarians and will be encouraged to present cases and assist in treatment where possible while in out patients.  They will scrub-in surgery on most week days.  The hospital operates from 7am to 8pm M-Sat, so the student hours will be adjusted to suit the student's educational needs and travel abilities (ex. fewer, but longer days if they are traveling long distance).

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

There is an up-stairs 1 BR appartment in the hospital that can be used by the student, if they desire.  The only cost involved would be occasional overnight or weekend treatments as they arise.  Up to 1 dog or 2 cats would be allowed, but the student would be responsible for any damages caused by their pets.  Contact Dr. Hammond hnhlane12@aol.com for further details.
