Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a 24 hour Emergency and Critical Care Hospital. We are open 24 hours per day. We care for dogs, cats, small mammals, birds, reptiles and wildlife. We see on average 500 to 650 cases per month. Our externs are paired with our doctors. They get to follow our doctors into exam rooms, discuss diagnostic testing that needs to be performed, review diagnostics and assist with designing a treatment plan. We allow all externs to assist with surgical procedures. We are able to assist them with experencing a wide variety of cases. We also have three cardiologist that work in our building that our externs have assess to for assistance with some cardiac and pulmonary cases.

Sonosite Ultrasound

Heska Dri Chem, Epoc lyte machine, Hematru and T4/cortisol units

Surgivet and Cardell monitors

Doppler BP and Pagewriter ECG

Packed red blood cells and fresh frozen plasma

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Externs work a variety of days or evening shifts. A 7am to 4pm or 4 pm to 12 am shift are assigned. If they want to stay later to assist with unique cases or help in surgery they are allowed to. Standarly they are given 4 shifts per week. Weekdays and weekends are intermixed. They are always scheduled with one to three doctors at a time. They will never be alone. Four to 7 technicians may be assigned to cases with them. Please see notes above regarding shadowing and assistance with surgeries.
