Animal Emergency Clinic NE, TX

Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a full functional emergency hospital. Triage all patients and deliver treatment plans for client with recommended actions needed. Will hospitalize patients for continued care/monitoring. Perform diagnostics including full Idexx labwork, radiographs, ultrasound. Perform surgery from minor wound care, lacerations to foreign body surgery, GDV, dystocias, splenectomy. Continue with post operative treatment and follow up care for the clients.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have a full staff that conducts initial triage on patients. Staff will perform all diagnostics asked from doctor and report results to the doctor. We use all Idexx equipment including Procyte, Catalyst, VetStat, Coags, and Sedivue. We have digital radiology and send all radiographs for STAT interpretation to either VetCT or Idexx with results in 1 hour. We have outside resources including Idexx Reference Laboratory, Minnesota Urolith Laboratory, Houston Vet Path for local necropsies, can perform brief ultrasounds in hospital. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Showing interests in all cases, showing compassion toward all patients as well as respect toward staff. Hours would be between 36-40 hours a week. Student will be shadowing doctor on duty. Will be able to do own physical examination and will be asked what they would recommend for treatment.

We have offered student a hotel, flight and rental car while here.
