Animal Health Associates, MI

Description of Elective Experience:

The student will be submerged into both small and large animal work. They can chose to go on large animal call or stay in house for surgeries or appointments with small animals. We have 4 doctors in the practice that the student will work with. We start the students with shadowing, but as they gain comfort, will be allowed to lead an appointment along side another vet guidance. We also have local farmers that will bring in barn cats for students to gain experience in spay/neutering.  We have numerous herd healths performed weekly for the student to gain palpating experience with the potential of also learning with an ultrasound.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our clinic has in house IDEXX lab equipment, dental equipment with dental xrays, digital xray, ultrasound (for LA palpation and SA diagnostic work, like cystos). We are currently staffed at a 2 to 1 ratio for assistants/doctors. We have numerous educational resources to provide students the opportunity to look information up to guide them along with a case.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student will be expected to work 8-5 mon-fri with lunch time provided (at least 1 hour). Weekends will be optional and up to the student. The student will also be allowed to help with emergencies call, if they please.  We start the students with shadowing, but increase to performing their own physical/work up along side another vet as we see them gain confidence.
