About Animal Medical Hospital
Located in Charlotte, North Carolina, Animal Medical Hospital is an AAHA accredited hospital, committed to providing the highest quality veterinary care and client service. We are a 24-hour hospital offering both general and emergency medicine as well as boarding, grooming, and day camp services. AMH is a modern, well-equipped, small animal hospital, which was started in 1983 and moved into a new 16,000 sq. ft. facility in 1992. We are currently expanding our hospital to include a brand new state of the art ICU. AMH was honored as one of the Top 8 Finalists for AAHA’s 2010 Practice of the Year.
Our goal is to provide a well-rounded learning experience in both general practice and emergency medicine to veterinary students that is focused on their individual learning goals.
Externs will rotate between our two departments spending time on the general practice side with appointments and routine surgeries (spay/neuter, declaw, dentistry, etc) as well as experiencing daytime emergency medicine (seeing walk-ins, managing hospitalized patients, etc). If interested, we do offer evening emergency experience and can work out a schedule to accommodate this for you. We also perform a variety of emergency surgeries based on the specific cases that come in (examples include GDV, C-Section, Splenectomy, Enterotomy/Gastrotomy, etc).
Our Mission: We strive to provide superior service and compassionate care to improve the lives of the pets we serve. We value integrity, superior service, compassionate care, respect, teamwork and accountability.
The professional staff includes around 13 associate veterinarians, 5 interns, and 75 support staff. There are multiple licensed technicians as well as trained technical staff to assist doctors. We average 40-50 cases per day. The facility has a large treatment area that is the center of activity as well as a dedicated Intensive Care Unit. A large surgery suite, dental suite + digital dental radiology equipment, and digital radiology suite are adjacent to this central hub. Our surgery and dental suite can each accomodate two procedures at a time. We have a variety state of the art equipment (cold laser, surgical laser, ultrasound, etc) and an in-house laboratory (some equipment includes Sedivue, Coagulation machine, variety of snap tests, microscopes, etc). The practice is paperless and uses a windows-based, networked practice management system called Cornerstone.
We have a board certified surgeon who comes in to perform surgeries for us on an as needed basis. There is a local ophthalmologist in the area as well that comes in every other week to see appointments so there is opportunity to spend time with either specialty if they are here when an extern is visiting.
We are flexible in scheduling but typically set our externs up with 40 hour work weeks. We ask externs their interest prior to scheduling so that we can determine hours based on interest of extern. Average days are either 8 am to 6 pm (appointment shadowing shift) or 7 am to 6 pm (emergency or surgery shift). Some externs have expressed interest in shadowing the evening hour emergency department, which can range from working 2 pm to 10 pm or 4 pm to 12 am depending on what extern prefers to do. Our externs are always shadowing a veterinarian and if interested in our internship program, we are happy to have our externs shadow current interns as well.
Expectations and Duties of Externs
- Externs must conduct themselves in a professional manner
- Externs should arrive on time for scheduled shifts
- Externs will have hands-on experience, as determined by a supervising veterinarian
- Dress is business casual, with no open-toed shoes, and white lab coat when seeing appointments. You can wear scrubs on surgery or emergency days
- Externs will be evaluated here on enthusiasm, willingness to learn, initiative, and professional skills. The intern director will fill out your specific school evaluation and send back prior to its due date
We do not provide housing for externs traveling to the area, and they are responsible for providing their own housing. We can offer resources, and most externs who come here either find a residence hotel, stay with family/friends in the area, or use Air BnB.
