The ASPCA Adoption Center serves animals who need us the most. We provide care to dogs and cats coming in through the NYPD or our community engagement team, those with high medical or behavioral needs, and animals like neonatal kittens who take a bit more time before being adopted. Join the ASPCA Adoption Center's team of skilled medical, behavior, and other professionals to gain hands-on shelter medicine experience. Externs will learn how to provide holistic care for individual animals and the overall shelter population. You'll also discover how shelter medicine supports animal health in the community.
Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the ASPCA Adoption Center is a spacious, state-of-the-art shelter with highly qualified veterinarians and behavior specialists on staff.
Externships are a minimum of two weeks and can be up to four weeks in duration. Applications must be received at least two months prior to the requested start date.

Veterinary Externship Reimbursement for NYC (VERN) is a pilot reimbursement program designed to address financial barriers often faced by veterinary students wishing to participate in an externship with one of the ASPCA’s New York City-based programs. VERN will reimburse up to $1,000 for (20) 3rd and 4th-year veterinary students to offset transportation, lodging, and food costs incurred while completing the externship.
