Students rotate between 3 properties owned and operated by the Audubon Nature Institute. The properties include the Audubon Zoo, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and the Freeport McRoran Species survival center. In addition, students are also invited to assist with the rescue and rehabilitation of stranded marine mammals and sea turtles through the Coastal Wildlife Network. Students daily duties will include assisting with work ups and treatments of cases, managing wildlife cases that present to the Zoo, pariticipating in Necropsies, and completeing weekly reading and written assignments covering a wide variety of taxa.
4 DVMs across 3 properties; ultrasound, radiographic, and endoscopic technologies.
Students will work 5 days per week but will be to participate in proceedures on their days off. In the event of a marine mammal in rehabilitation, students may be asked to work more often in order to maximize their learning opportunities. As each property has its own schedule, students will be given a choice of properties and proceedures each day, but are expected to be at each property at least 1 day per week. In addition, each week has a written curriculum focusig on taxa specific topics that are seen in the ANI collection. Students will have reading assigments and must complete a weekly written quiz, which is then reviewed with the veterinary staff. Students will hvae primary case responsibility of wildlife cases that present to Audubon Zoo under the direct supervision of the veterinarian working that day, Students will be expected to present a written plan for a case work up and treatment plan for each case.
