Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
General Times & Expectations:
- Expected clinic time will be Monday-Friday 9-7pm. We are open 7-days per week, and you are welcome (but not required) to shadow/work on the weekends if desired.
- You will be expected to provide treatments and assessments on our Parvo ICU patients every morning of your externship (except the first day). You will start at 9am (and you can come into the clinic at 11am). This is great hands-on experience (placing catheters, IVs, SQs, examining a critical patient, etc) & will give you an idea of how we utilize volunteers for nearly everything in a shelter setting!
- You will be primarily involved in medicine cases instead of surgery. You can shadow some spay/neuter and special surgeries for a few hours each week, but you are encouraged to get as involved in mostly medicine cases, as this is the area in which APA differs greatly from any other private practice or shelter. We have a very high backlog of spay/neuter surgeries so unfortunately we are unable to accommodate hands-on teaching of spay/neuter techniques.
- You will get access to our shelter software (Shelterluv) and scheduling system (Waitwhile) so you can be familiar with our schedule and access to patient medical records. You are encouraged to get as involved as possible in as many cases as possible. This includes but is not limited to: taking history, doing a physical exam, speaking with fosters and adopters (or shadowing vets and techs as we do), administering medications, making your own medical plan, writing SOAP notes then having a vet review.
- If there are emergency walk ins and/or surgeries after hours, students are expected to stay
