AVETS, PA

Description of Elective Experience:

Students rotating through AVETS will have the opportunity to rotate through our Emergency and Critical care department, Internal Medicine service, and Surgery department.  Student responsibilities will vary by service, but may include active participation with patient care and client communication, performing emergency treatments and procedures, and participating in rounds.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

The hospital is fully functional emergency and specialty hospital with 24/7 emergency and critical care department, as well as specialty services including internal medicine and surgery services.  In addition to routine monitoring equipment, the hospital is also facilitated with an imaging suite (abodminal ultrasound, CT scanner, MRI), and advanced therapeutics including endoscopy and arthroscopy equipment, continuous renal replacement, high-flow oxygen therapy, and a mechanical ventilator.  Aside from veterinary specialists and emergency doctors, the hospital is also staffed with Emergency and critical care residnets, rotating interns, trained veterinary technicians (including three VTS in Emergency and Critical Care), veterinary assistants, client service representatives, and a management/facilities team.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The extern schedule may be somewhat variable and will depend on the preferences of the extern as to which rotations they would like to participate in.  Extern schedules generally include 4-5 day a week coverage for approximately 10 hour shifts, which may include swing shifts and weekends to allow for increased experience during busy times of the day.  Externs will shadow specialists and emergency doctors.  They may also become more involved with case responsibilites, primary patient care and client communication, medical record keeping, and performing technical procedures pending caseload - especially while on the emergency and critical care service.  This may include IV catheters, blood draws, thoracocentesis, wound repair, and varying other procedures.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Student housing is not directly available, however an extern may inquire as to opportunities for housing with AVETS staff, as well as a variety of local hotels and other housing opportinities.
