Description of Elective Experience: 

Aviagen is a poultry primary breeder company. We supply 70% of the global poultry breeding stock. During the externship, students will spend time with all of our internal veterinarians. They will get to visit Great-Grandparent (GGP) and Grandparent (GP) farms. Students will learn about poultry husbandry, management, common poultry diseases, and improve their poultry necropsy skills. Student will also spend time in our laboratory learning the most up to date techniques for diagnosing disease challenges and monitoring via the NPIP guidelines. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have a staff of 5 veterinarians, all of which are ACPV board certified. We provide housing for externs. Students will also be provided with all of the PPE and necropsy supplies they will need for their time at Aviagen. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students will be shadowing veterinarians on farm calls Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Housing is provided for the duration of their time at Aviagen. Students will not be able to bring their pets.
