Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic, IN

Description of Elective Experience: 

Student will participate in the daily clinical activities of a 100% exotic animal service.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Staffing includes four full-time veterinarians: Dr. Lennox - Dipl. ABVP, Avian and ECM, Dr. Samantha Swisher- Dipl. ABVP, Dr. Taylor Lewis and Dr. Rayna Moy. Support staff includes certified veterinary technicians.

Resources: There are numerous textbooks, journals and specialized exotics materials available to use at the clinic. Please read through all species care handouts; these are available on our website or in a binder at the clinic. There is also a compiled database of numerous topic summaries and journal clubs. Rounds are held daily.

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student Responsibilities:

  • Assist technicians and doctors with morning, afternoon, and evening treatments
  • Assist and shadow doctors during appointments, procedures, and surgeries
  • Participate in the general nursing care of our patients and client educatiuon after demonstrating adequate proficiency.
  • Triage and develop a treatment plan for wildlife cases as they present throughout the day
  • Participate in scheduled rounds and present information as required by clinicians
  • Take careful histories from clients during appointments or drop-off emergencies
  • Discharge surgical or hospitalize patients
  • May practice techniques & mock surgeries on available cadavers

Hours:

Monday-Thursday: 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
Friday: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Saturday: 8:00 am – 3:00 pm
