Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital of Georgia, GA

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a private practice exclusively dedicated to the care of exotic pets.  We are a full service veterinary hospital offering both medical and surgical services along with boarding.  We opened in October 2015, so we are still a small but fairly busy and growing practice.  Because we are small, any veterinary students will receive extensive shadowing experience directly with the veterinarian, along with hands on experience with both the veterinarian and an RVT on staff.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

The veterinarian is a diplomate of the ABVP in Reptile and Amphibian practice and has 13 years of experience treating only exotics.  We have recently added an associate vet who completed a 1 year internship in exotic animal medicine.   We also have a registered veterinary technician on staff.  We have digital radiography, ultrasound, in house bloodwork and other diagnostics, endoscopy, and a large library of exotic animal medicine textbooks that the student is able to use while here.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to be at the clinic shadowing during our normal business hours of 8-6 M-F.  They can come early and stay late to help with treatments of in house patients and boarders or emergencies.  We are also open 8-12 on Saturdays.  Students are welcome to come then, but it is not required.  When the veterinarian is seeing cases the students is expected to be shadowing her.  If the veterinarian is not busy, the student can shadow our RVT or use any of our educational resources available.
